Acrylic Painter — Alor Setar, Kedah

The Malaysia between the postcards.

Original acrylic paintings of the kampungs, jetties and quiet coastlines of Kedah and Perlis — painted on site, brush in hand, long before anyone thought to photograph them.

Why Collectors Choose Aqmal

Painted from a real place, not a stock photo.

Painted on location

Most pieces begin outdoors with a sketchbook and a mixing tray, not a screen. That's where the real light and texture come from.

Rooted in real places

Every canvas is named for its kampung, jetty or hill — Kuala Sala, Tebengau, Batu Hampar — not a generic "seascape no. 4".

Award-winning hand

Winner, Karnival Kesenian Islam 2017, with pieces exhibited and collected across the northern states.

Collector Notes

What it's like to own one.

“

The painting of Kuala Sala hangs in our living room now and every guest asks where it is. It feels exactly like standing on that jetty at 6pm.

We commissioned a painting of my late grandmother's house in Perlis. Aqmal got the roofline and the old well exactly right — it means everything to my family.

Hafiz R. — Kangar
“

Honest, easy to work with, and the finished piece arrived better than the reference photo I sent. Already planning a second commission.

The Painter

An easel, a mixing tray, and a stretch of coastline.

Aqmal Mokhtar has spent the last decade painting the parts of Kedah and Perlis that don't make it onto travel posters — fishing jetties at low tide, timber houses going soft at the edges, paddy fields at first light. In 2017 his work won at Karnival Kesenian Islam, and it's been in private collections across the north ever since.

My Story

Kedah is the only subject I've never gotten tired of.

I grew up an hour from the coast, and most of my early sketchbooks are full of the same handful of places — the jetty at Kuala Kedah, the rice fields near Gunung Keriang, the wooden houses along the Perlis border. Painting them in acrylic, outdoors, became less of a hobby and more of a habit I couldn't shake.

In 2017, a painting of a rural mosque scene won at Karnival Kesenian Islam (KKI), which was the first time I let myself call this a practice rather than a pastime. Since then the work has found its way into homes across Kedah, Perlis and Penang, and into a small but steady stream of commissions from people who want their own kampung, their own boat, their own grandmother's house painted the same way.

How I work

Most originals start on site with a fold-up easel and a limited palette — usually four or five colours, mixed on the spot to match the actual light of that hour. Commissions work a little differently: I ask for a handful of reference photos and, where possible, a conversation about what the place actually meant to you, because that's usually what ends up on the canvas.

“To paint the Malaysia that's easy to drive past — before it changes for good.”

What Makes the Work Different

Four things I won't compromise on.

01 — PLACE

Every canvas is a named place

Not "coastal scene" or "village life" — Kuala Sala, Tebengau, Batu Hampar. If you know the spot, you'll recognise it.

02 — PROCESS

Field first, studio second

Colour and light are mixed on site whenever possible, then finished in the studio — not built entirely from a photo reference.

03 — RECOGNITION

Competition-tested

Winner, Karnival Kesenian Islam 2017 — work that has held up next to other exhibiting artists, not just online.

04 — RELATIONSHIP

Direct, no gallery markup

Every commission and sale is a direct conversation with the artist — no middleman, no inflated gallery pricing.

In the Studio

Every piece still starts with a blank canvas and a stretch of quiet.

Between field sketches and finished commissions, most of the real work happens here — small studio, big windows, and whatever painting is due next leaning against the shelf.
